Whilst in Austria I saw some beautiful horses in the snow. I loved how their dark coats contrasted against the stark white of the snow. From photographs I constructed this image using acrylic paint on Ampersand Claybord. I enjoyed modelling the horse using layers of thin paint. I used a limited palette of a brown, a blue and a red and this added to the simplicity of the image. The background was made by first putting dribbles of paint on and then scratching and etching into it. The snowflakes are a combination of dabbed out colour and white paint in the foreground to add perspective. Of course horses in Austria are well used to the snow but for the sake of the picture I made sure this horse was walking towards some shelter as it seemed kinder!
