This is an experimental painting of my nephew with his favourite superheroes. I wanted the portrait to be realistic and detailed to contrast with the brightly coloured comic book characters. I painted the portrait in acrylic and oil paint on a wooden board and once dry covered it in a layer of clear resin, I then added the painted cut out cartoon characters and put it in a frame that I painted to match the background, then covered the whole thing in a second layer of resin. I was trying to give the painting a 3D effect with the cartoon characters interacting with the portrait as if they are a figment of his imagination, the resin gives the figure an ethereal look and a softness that cannot be achieved with paint alone.
