A very hot, bright June day in this lovely Cumbrian valley allowed me to make this oil sketch en plein air without any fear of things being cut short by rain. When the glacier carved out Little Langdale, it left one or two of these rocky turrets. This one had some large trees tenaciously growing out of it. In Italy, a medieval fort might now crown it too? The painting is on canvas board. I've decided lately that this can make things easier when working en plein air, especially when the sun moves round behind the painting. It also allowed me to make a painting to precise dimensions - those of "Dardagny, Morning", one of my favourites in the National Gallery's collection by one of my mentors, JBC Corot. The painting is unframed at the moment, and in pristine "from the field" condition.
