Autumn was approaching the day I found a comfortable seat at the base of a drystone wall at the Buttermere end of Crummock Water, and made this oil sketch. I'm rather camera shy when painting, and at first I didn't realise that a public footpath ran along just behind the wall, but it led to some nice chats with some of the passing ramblers. The sky was splendid that day, I thought. I haven't altered the sketch in any way since, which also is how I like it.
