1/8/14 in north Donegal was a wet morning. This began to clear towards lunchtime, so I returned to a painting site I had already spotted, behind the enormous line of sand dunes which forms the magnificent beach at Magheroarty. This is what makes plein air painting worthwhile, but also a bit tricky! You need a scene you want to paint, somewhere to sit, fair weather and opportunity. In this case, the weather had only just turned to "fair", so the sketch benefits from the towering rain clouds as the showers move away southwards. Fortunately too, the tide had not fully ebbed from the tidal lagoon behind the peninsula, which I think also helped me make the painting I wanted. Errigal is the sharp peak seen towards the right.
