This is "the grand view" of Eskdale. I was delivering some work to Eskdale School for their annual exhibition, and took the chance to make a painting in the area while I was there. I drove up the Ulpha Fell road until I was able to look back over the dale to the Scafells, whose heads are in the clouds in this oil sketch. I think the patchwork of voluminous clouds and the shadows they cast over hill and dale produce an abstract effect.
