I am obsessed with colour, shape and pattern and my work is almost entirely about exploring the relationships between the three elements, whether abstract or figurative, tightly constructed or expressive. My sketchbooks are full of drawings, notes and exercises that are my ‘bank’, a kind of reservoir of ideas and inspiration that I often develop later, sometimes years later!
Recently I’ve become interested in landscapes, from rural to urban, garden to imaginary; it’s early days so I’ve been making tiny, acrylic, semi abstract images of plants, imaginary floral watercolours, small collages and most recently a large urban collage which I absolutely loved making. All are based on drawings from life. I’m excited about the possibilities and have equipped myself with all kinds of lovely new drawing materials to continue exploring.+=
I am a writer and work in my notebooks most days, sometimes just for a few notes and sometimes for the many rewrites that poetry seems to need! I collect images and small objects that I find inspiring and paste them into my notebooks. There is a crossover between my painting and writing practices both in process and outcome; they definitely influence each other.
