A well-renowned educator, who paved the way for African American teachers. She was born in Philadelphia but died in Washington DC. Charlotte Forten Grimké was an alumnus of Salem State University and joined the Salem Female Anti-Slavery Society. Salem Normal School was the school's name at that time and it later became Salem State University. She was the first African American Student, according to Salem State University, " Charlotte Forten Grimké was the school’s first African American student and a graduate of the class of 1856, was the first northern African-American school teacher to journey south to teach freed slaves. (Salem State University, 2019).
