This watercolour is one of a series featuring people of Ghana.
The girl, dressed in expensive Kente cloth, sat apart from other children of the village. They were dressed in rags, but she was special: she had an air of importance, and the directness of her gaze suggests wisdom beyond her years.
In the background is an adaptation of a West African pattern. The ‘eyes’ represent the expectations of many who place their faith in a country in the vanguard of Africa’s progress into the 21st Century.
