I saw this scene while I was walking the dog along the River Deben in Suffolk when the tide was in. I stood gawping for some time, awe-struck. The only thing I could think of was Icarus falling through the gap in the clouds. He was the boy from Greek myth who flew with wings made from feathers stuck together with wax. When he got too near to the sun the wax melted and he fell to earth. In my painting he falls through the column of sunlight, not into the Mediterranean but into an English river. I didn't paint Icarus in - you will have to imagine him.
This oil painting is on a heavy wood panel 5cm deep and is not framed.
