I am a full time artist specialising mainly in wildlife, but also portraiture and domestic animals on commission. I live and work in central London - lucky me. Having grown up in Southern Africa I'm privileged to have spent many amazing hours studying and photographing incredible animals in their natural habitat - many before they were threatened much less endangered.

My early career was in advertising, winning both national and international creative awards, ultimately running a successful design and advertising agency before returning to the UK. I am passionate about wildlife and conservation and everything that entails. A percentage of my profits always goes to the conservation of the particular species I'm working on. I also volunteer at the world-renowned Battersea Dogs & Cats home.

I enjoy creating in all mediums, but work principally in the very exacting dry mediums of coloured pencil crayons, pastels, pure graphite and more recently silverpoint. Depending on a client's preferences, or my own choice, I will use oils or acrylics for certain portraits or commissions.

For wildlife portraits in the dry mediums I usually keep the background uncluttered and see the animal existing in its purist totality. I aim to capture that "single moment" of an animal's soul communicating with you. When the animal is featured in a 'setting' or landscape I prefer to keep the setting simple rather than distractingly detailed .

From a practical point of view, I work mainly from photographs or a combination of photography and drawing from life as good images of endangered species are, by definition, difficult to come by.

Since embarking on a full-time career as an artist in 2011, my work has been selected for several high-profile international exhibitions, amongst which are: The David Shepherd Wildlife artist of the Year: 2017 (portfolio) 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011; The UK Coloured Pencil Society: 2017, 2016 (Winner of Faber-Castell Award - Best Pure Coloured Pencil, and Winner - People's Choice); Winner, 2015 - (Winner - Best in Show), 2014 - (Winner - Best Pure Colour Pencil),  2013, 2012, 2011 (Winner - People's Choice). The Chelsea Arts Society: 2016, 2015, 2013, 2012 (Winner - Heatherley's Prize for Drawing). The Society of Equestrian Artists 2014.  I am a signature member of the UKCPS, having achieved silver status in 2015. My work is held in provate collections in the UK, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, United States, Canada, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Here are just a few examples of my work. I'm happy to say that every one of my customers has been delighted with the results. Because some of the early pencil pet portraits were not professionally scanned for my portfolio at the time they were handed over, the reproduction that I have of them is not great - but you get the idea.

Many of us love portraits of our precious pets or people we love - they make super gifts as well - and I have examples of these in pencil, pastels or oils if clients are interested.

I'm happy to undertake commissions and discuss any particular requirements - straightforward or intricate.
