I painted this portrait of the Roman Empress ,Julia Agrippina- also known as Agrippina The Younger - to compliment my painting of the emperor Nero titled 'The Contrast of Nero'. I based her likeness on statues of Agrippina, using a softer pastel palette to bring a feeling of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty to the painting. I was inspired by Cleopatra who merged her image with the Egyptian goddess Isis to create the image of 'the mother of Egypt', along with Agrippina's son Nero, who merged his image with that of Apollo the god of the sun, music and the arts.
