This portrait of Roman emperor Nero was inspired by classical Roman statues of his likeness. I painted this for an art competition titled 'Heroism and Hubris' that the online Classics journal 'The Antigone Journal' ran in 2021. I wanted to try and incorporate elements of contrasting stories of his time in power as a representation of Nero, along with subtle verisim as seen in Roman portraiture. I added elements of Apollo, the god of the sun and music, to the portrait as Nero merged his image with that of Apollo.
