I enjoy exploring the outer limits of what can be created from an unwanted and rather mundane material such as cardboard. I use discarded cardboard fruit boxes, salvaged from street markets and supermarkets to explore form, space and texture in a three-dimensional context. Having glued the flat reinforced corrugated cardboard bottoms from these boxes together into very solid blocks, I then carve out various shapes using an industrial bandsaw. I discovered this technique while studying for an honours degree in Fine Art under the auspices of Lincoln University at New College Stamford. I love the element of surprise in my work, as I cut across the grain of the cardboard at differing angles and discover endless patterns and textures from corugations. I also repurpose honeycomb cardboard packaging revealiing the inner structures. You can see more of my work on my website: josettecarroll.com
