Inspired by a power-cut during the Covid-19 lockdown. The house was decked with candles as we waited for the electricity to come back on. With no juice - and banned from leaving the house to sit somewhere with power - you have to break routine.
The subject had long felt that some of my previous portraits had been a bit ‘warts & all.’ (See ‘PhD.’) It led to a conversation about what ‘the artist sees’ as opposed to pure ‘observation.’
This Caravaggio-like portrait depicts the woman I fell in love with 4 decades ago - and who I still see across the dinner table every evening.
