It's been a bit of an iffy summer, but the weather held while I made this oil sketch between about 10.30 am and 2.30 pm. There was a sharp wind blowing when I started at this spot near Castlerigg, but I had some protection from a stout dry-stone wall at my back. By 2.30, it was warm in the sunshine. This vista was a challenge, but I recently came across this encouraging quote from Renoir: "One must from time to time attempt things that are beyond one's capacity." At present the painting is offered as finished at the scene, but I may yet add one or two sheep.
