I hugely enjoyed a visit to Paris & the Louvre in April 2011, especially escaping the crowds to enjoy the French School paintings. The Corots were a treat there, as were the Courbets, Manets etc at the Musee d'Orsay.
Back in Cumbria, whilst out on my favourite cycle rides I have started to see Corots everywhere! For this painting, I have borrowed the small figure of a shepherd from the master and placed it in a scene on the Mosser - Lorton "green road" near where I live.
I have also realised how small I usually work. My usual plein-air sketch size is 14x18 inches, & I do not usually try to handle a larger size when working outdoors. Le Petit Berger is a studio work, so I have gone up to 24x30 inches, comparable to some of the work I enjoyed in the Louvre.
