The Docky Break. 55cm wide x 45cm high x 1.5cm deep. Acrylic on stretched canvas, with metallic acrylic paint to create highlights. A Docky break was taken by agricultural workers in East Anglia usually around mid-day after working in the fields from early morning. Traditionally their pay would have been docked when they stopped for a meal, and it is thought this is how the term "Docky Break" was created. They would carry their meal in a "Docky Bag" and this may also have led to the term "Doggy Bag" in later times. This painting was inspired by a family photograph taken in the 1950s. One man under the tree is holding a book in which he would keep a note of the number of sacks filled with grain, and hours worked by the labourers.
