An under employed portrait photographer plies his trade in a busy St Mark's Square whilst a tourist uses his mobile to do a "selfie". This is a commentary on the passage of time and custom and the implications of fast changing technology, but who is the portraitist of the title? is the figure under the parasol the photographer or a local just taking shade? is the artist/observer the real portraitist staring out at us from the background or is it really the figure with his mobile clasped in an outstretched arm? you choose.
