I am best known 'up north' as a landscape painter of northern sensibility. This has something to do with the ruggedness of the land I grew up in but it's also connected with the light. So, even when I'm painting a tropical sunset here in my studio in Cumbria, a memory from a voyage down the Atlantic back in 2016, I'm really thinking about sunsets over the Irish Sea from Barrow-in Furness where I used to work in the shipyard many years ago.

I recently completed a research project working with climate change scientists which gave me the opportunity to understand the weather and the effect on the land from a different perspective and to make work using scientific data and images. Some of this involved accompanying scientists on exciting expeditions to Lapland, Helgoland and the Atlantic.
