Painted for no other reason than self-indulgence. I love the photographs of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, and I am probably his greatest admirer. Studying his work I came across this girl in several of his pieces and became intrigued. She also appears in other photographers work. Lizzie Alice Hawksfield must have lived a terribly hard life, but she seems to have become a muse for Victorian photographers. I believe that she emigrated to Australia and lived a long life. I would have loved to talk to her about the 'old days' in Whitby and would have gladly given this painting to her.
