As with other pieces shown here this painting has a sculptural element to it, with the hand being projected forward through a stitching and padding process.
The painting is a self-portrait and is addressing issues of both the personal feelings of wanting to shut out the world but also the popular culture and language of youth. Much of my work at the moment is exploring the strange similarities between being middle aged and being a teenager! The changes that occur in your life when your children grow up and leave home can be just as traumatic as those when you embark upon the adult world as a teenager. This painting does, I hope, show a bond between these two worlds.
