Arthur Conan Doyle's writings mentions Holmes smoking three kinds of pipes: a black or dirty, oily clay pipe; an old briar; and a long Cherrywood. A curved pipe for Holmes because it allows one to speak while smoking the pipe, as the leverage is better: a straight-stemmed pipe puts strain on the teeth, making clear speech on the stage nearly impossible and requires the hands to move toward the face to hold it.
