One of my favourite painting subjects in a place that is very special to me. For as long as I can remember I have returned time and time again to walk and touch these stones which ‘look like an assemblage of ancient druids, mysteriously stern and invincibly silent and shaggy’.
The enigmatic Ring of Brodgar is an enormous Neolithic site dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. It comprises a massive stone circle and at least 13 prehistoric burial mounds. It is one of the most spectacular prehistoric monuments in the British isles and is part of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site: a series of important domestic and ritual monuments built 5000 years ago in the Orkney Islands.
