Alice is the owner of a local business in Chudleigh, Devon, where she has lived for nearly half her life. This painting explores the importance of local businesses like Alice’s that are part of a local community. During the coronavirus pandemic many businesses have worked hard keep their doors open, so as a local artist I wanted to highlight these and the people behind them.
Alice can be seen in the threshold of her shop, which has seen a drastic change over the last year. On the windows we see COVID-19 regulation posters. Alice has had to adjust the way that she works, to keep herself and the public, who depend on her shop, safe. But, like many others, it’s not just a business for Alice, it’s about her local community and interacting with those within it. Alice is also part of the local council and strives to make a positive impact on matters such as the Climate emergency.
This painting was painted using a limited palette and on a large scale to create impact.
