A combination of direct observation and studio work. This image of colour saturation welcomed countless thousands of web viewers onto the contemporary art website called axis as their introductory site image for many months, possibly a year. As a painting it represented the standard square format picture viewers were used to seeing from me, heavily invested in stylisation, energetic rendering and usually a simple visual formula. It came from my journeys to and from supplying a gallery in the Midlands. The poppy sight was real. I injected the idea with lashings of licence to heighten and brighten it and at the end of the 1990s I tuned to further landscape ideas involving sunflowers, bluebells, lavender, etc, all giving a fantastic colour graphic punch.
