I tested myself with the discipline of landscape painting in the early 1990s and by the stage of painting this piece I had settled on an unusual square picture format and had developed a very high horizon line - two unconventional devices for landscape. I began to work on a succession of pieces which I called 'hay feaver pictures' which concentrated on the abstracted depiction of seed heads, wild flowers and grasses. It brought in my love of the buttery quality of oil paint as I dabbed and layered applications of colour onto the work surface.
