Born from a window view within a still life composition. This, and a small clutch of other Venetian scenes, spring as ideas in their own right, as explained, from a pictorial device I often use in my composing of tabletop arrangements of objects and domestic drapery and furnishings with a window backdrop. The window components as 'bit-players' in Still Life compositions act as pictures within pictures. It leads the eye out of the domestic scene and into a world beyond. I did such a good job, I thought, of the Venetian scene in a painting, which holds the same title and is the first in the mini-series, that I thought I would embark on these individual smaller pieces.
