Isobel Haslam was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1962. After training at Salford College of Technology and Leicester Polytechnic she graduated with a BA Hons in Fashion and Textile Design in 1984. After many years designing, painting, lecturing and travelling, she finally settled in Hexham, Northumberland where she lives with her family.
In the last decade Isobel has been developing a more illustrative and fine art approach to her work, communicating her love of the natural environment. Images and sensations of places personal to Isobel have been translated into paintings with a kaleidoscopic dream-like quality where pattern and colour collide to dramatic effect. The textures and minutiae of living things combine with her appreciation of world arts and crafts to become highly elaborate works.
Each work is achieved using multi-layers of gouache, applied over hotpressed paper, in a sense embroidering with a paintbrush, each piece taking weeks of work to complete.
