Born in northwestern Ontario in Canada in 1958, Frank Vescio has lived in France since 1978. Student at the National School of Decorative Arts in Nice, he moved to Paris in 1980 in order to continue his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His intent at the time was to be able to learn to paint like the masters in order to create realistic oil paintings. Over a certain period of time he explored and experimented with colour effects and techniques, mixing styles and mediums. Franks style evolved and he developed a technique using acrylic and wax mediums to produce vibrant and colourful paintings to express his love and inspiration for the west African culture and people. Frank became inspired by the urban dance culture in Paris producing less colourful artworks where emphasis was placed on the expressive movements of this exciting urban dance.
Frank now creates abstract compositions mixing Indian ink, coloured pencils as well as paintings using pigments and various oil and acrylic mediums. He experiments with Moku Hanga printmaking, dry point engraving, stencils and various other mark-making techniques. One can see the influence of the abstract artists in his artwork such as Miro and Kandinsky as well as the artists Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh and her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh of the Art Nouveau period. The visual aesthetics of Eastern calligraphy are also clearly seen in his compositions. His abstractions are a study in the formal aspects of visual arts. Frank Vescio taught visual arts at the American School of Paris for 27 years and retired from teaching in 2020. He is now a full time visual artist in Paris, France.
